Adobe Launches AI-Powered Assistant for Photoshop in Beta Release
Adobe has officially rolled out its artificial intelligence assistant for Photoshop, making the feature available to users through beta testing on web platforms and mobile applications. The software giant simultaneously introduced enhanced AI-driven image manipulation features to its Firefly media creation platform.
Originally unveiled during Adobe’s MAX conference in October, the Photoshop AI assistant enables users to perform complex image modifications through simple text commands. The tool can eliminate unwanted objects or individuals from photographs, modify color schemes, and adjust lighting conditions based on user prompts. Additionally, the assistant responds to conversational instructions for tasks such as applying soft lighting effects, cropping images to specific dimensions, enhancing shadow details, or completely transforming backgrounds.
Adobe has structured access to the AI assistant based on subscription tiers. Paying Photoshop subscribers receive unlimited generation capabilities through April 9, while users on free plans are allocated 20 generations as an initial allowance.
The company has also introduced an innovative feature called AI markup, currently in public beta testing. This functionality allows users to draw directly on their screens to mark specific elements, which the AI assistant then modifies according to instructions. Users can sketch flowers or highlight objects for removal to alter background compositions.
Firefly, Adobe’s media creation platform, is receiving significant upgrades with new image editing capabilities. The platform now includes Generative Fill technology, a feature that has been integrated into Photoshop for several years, enabling users to replace or insert objects while automatically adjusting surrounding backgrounds.
Additional enhancements to Firefly include a generative removal tool for object elimination, generative expand functionality for AI-powered image enlargement, and generative upscaling features. The platform also gains a single-click background removal tool for streamlined editing workflows.
In a move to boost user engagement, Adobe announced in February that it would provide unlimited generations for Firefly subscribers. The company has expanded its AI capabilities by integrating over 25 external video and image generation models from various providers, including Google’s Nano Banana 2, OpenAI’s Image Generation system, Runway’s Gen-4.5, and Black Forest Labs’ Flux.2 Pro.
