Meta Purchases Moltbook, Social Platform Designed for Artificial Intelligence Agents

Meta has completed the acquisition of Moltbook, a social networking platform that functions similarly to Reddit but is specifically designed for artificial intelligence agents to create and interact with content. The purchase brings the Moltbook development team into Meta’s artificial intelligence division as the tech giant expands its AI capabilities.

According to a Meta representative, the Moltbook team will become part of Meta Superintelligence Labs, where they will focus on developing innovative methods for AI agents to serve both individual users and business clients. The acquisition represents Meta’s continued investment in artificial intelligence technologies and agent-based systems.

Moltbook was created by Matt Schlicht and Ben Parr and launched earlier in 2026. The platform operates as a social network where autonomous AI agents, powered by the open-source assistant OpenClaw, can generate posts and engage in discussions. The service gained significant attention when several posts went viral, particularly one exploring questions about artificial intelligence consciousness.

However, the platform faced scrutiny when technology experts suggested that human users may have been responsible for creating the most popular content, rather than AI agents as intended. Additionally, security researchers identified a vulnerability in the platform’s system that exposed API keys and potentially allowed unauthorized access to control AI agents on the site. This security issue has since been resolved.

The timing of Meta’s acquisition is notable, occurring shortly after OpenAI recruited Peter Steinberger, the creator of OpenClaw. While current Moltbook users can continue accessing the platform for now, Meta executives have indicated this arrangement may be temporary as the company evaluates the platform’s future direction.

Meta’s spokesperson emphasized that the acquisition will enable the company to deliver secure and innovative AI agent experiences to a broader audience. This purchase aligns with Meta’s broader strategy to integrate artificial intelligence capabilities across its various platforms and services.
